UNDESA DSPD Civil Society

Mission Statement

Civil Society and Outreach Unit

The Civil Society and Outreach Unit aims at providing a two-way information tract between NGOs and the Division: it will hold briefings for representatives of NGOs on mandates and core issues relating to social development and to the work of the Division, as well as on procedures guiding their implementation and the way NGOs can contribute to them; and the Unit will take stock of the needs and concerns raised by NGOs so as stimulate a productive collaboration between them and relevant services of the Division.

It will encourage a more active involvement of NGOs in the substantive work of the Division. In so doing, it will focus on the way the Division could benefit from the expertise and experience accumulated by NGOs, especially at the grass-root level.

Through the Unit, the Division intends to stimulate a more proactive and productive involvement of NGOs in the work of the Commission for Social Development and other major United Nations events for which the Division provides substantive servicing.

We will contribute to promoting social policy and development among civil society organizations by conducting briefings, seminars and workshops. It will also participate in activities carried out by NGOs.

UN and Civil Society

United Nations and Civil Society
The United Nations is both a participant in and a witness to an increasingly global civil society. More and more, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society organizations (CSOs) are UN system partners and valuable UN links to civil society.
