Kenya launched theInternational Year of Cooperatives 2012 on Tuesday, 29th November 2011 at the Kenyatta International Conference Center grounds. The President of the Republic H.E. Mwai Kibaki officiated during the occassion.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Mrs. Jabulile Mashwama officially launched the IYC 2012 at S&B Restaurant. There was also the unveiling of the IYC 2012 symbol with the theme “Cooperative Enterprises Build a Stable Economy”. This symbol would be mounted at the Swaziland Cooperative College and will remind all co-operators and visiting individuals that the year 2012 was declared as the year of cooperatives.

H.E. President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete launched the International Year of Cooperatives at the Mnazi Mmoja Grounds in Dar es Salaam. The event was marked with the laying of the foundation stone of the Ushirika Tower, a 20-story building of the Tanzania Federation of Cooperatives (TFC). The President was joined by Jumanne Maghembe, MP Minister of Agriculture, Cooperatives and Food Security, Hassan Wakasuvi, Chairman of the TFC and other dignitaries. Official representatives from the UN, ILO andICA were also present to witness the launch. The celebrations were also marked by exhibitions where cooperatives showcased their activities.

The launch of the International Year of Cooperatives was done under the theme,” cooperatives built a better World”. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Small and Medium enterprise and Cooperative Development Mrs Ndlovu was co master of ceremony with ZINAHCO’s board deputy president Mr Ben Moyo. Among the guests were UN representatives, SADC representatives, Zimbabwe National Cooperative Federation representatives, Prison Band. Mrs Ndlovu applauded the cooperative movement for setting up and coordinating this important day. She indicated the year 2012 was a turning point for cooperatives in Zimbabwe.

On January 13, 2012, at the United Nations University in Tokyo, the kickoff event of the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) 2012, was held under the auspices of the National Planning Committee under the theme “cooperative enterprises build a better world”. The venue was filled to its full capacity with about 350 participants, including government officials, the media, IYC committee officials and representatives from co-operatives nationwide.

The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) in cooperation with the Philippine cooperative movement held the National Show of Cooperative Force (NSCF) on February 18th with the theme Cooperative –A Celebration of People Empowerment & Strength of the Human Spirit”. Fifty thousand cooperative members from different provinces will converge on February 18 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle for the first salvo of the year-long celebration of the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC).

Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat, officially launched Singapore’s program for the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives (IYC) celebrations at the 30th Anniversary Dinner of the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF), the apex body of Singapore’s co-operatives. Joining the launch at Resorts World Sentosa, were Minister of State, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mdm Halimah Yacob, Advisor to the IYC National Committee and Member of the International Co- operative Alliance (ICA) Global Board, Mr Seah Kian Peng, Chairman of the SNCF Executive Council and Singapore’s IYC National Committee, Mr Chan Tee Seng, Chairman of the Central Co-operative Fund Committee, Mr Chandra Das and more than 400 members and guests of the Singapore Co-operative Movement.

The United Nations’s resolution to dedicate Year 2012 as The International Year of Cooperatives was officially launched in Malta, on Thursday 15thDecember, 2011. The launch was addressed by Parliament Speaker Dr. Michael Frendo, assisted by Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Jason Azzopardi, PL Deputy Leader Dr. Anglu Farrugia, Cooperatives Board Chairman Mr. Wilfred Kenely, the organizing committee’s Chairman Mr. Michael Mercieca and Ms. Rosette Thake representing Koperattivi Malta.

In Portugal, the development centre for co-operatives CASES, hosted the official launch of the International Year at 5.00pm (GMT/local time). The opening speech was given by Pedro Mota Soares, the Minister for Solidarity and Social Security. He was joined by Eduardo Graça, President of CASES; Manuel dos Santos Gomes, President of CONFAGRI; and Jerónimo Teixeira, President of CONFECOOP.

On January 12th, the International Year of Cooperatives were officially and simultaneously launched in different countries, the United Kingdom included. Co-operatives UK launched its celebrations for the International Year of Co-operatives. A panel of co-operators came together to discuss whether co-operation is the key to rebuilding British business. Held at the Guardian newspaper office in London and hosted by Jo Confino, Executive Editor of The Guardian, the discussion was broadcast live on the Global News Hub.

On February 4th 2012 at the Belize Credit Union League (BCUL) New Headquarters at #88 Victoria Street in Belize City, representatives from BCUL and affiliated Credit Unions countrywide, the Cooperatives Department, the Belize Fisherman Cooperatives Association, the Central Bank of Belize and other invited guests officially launched the International Year of Credit Unions and Cooperatives (IYC2012) and inaugurated BCUL’s new headquarters.

The Dominica Cooperative Movement, in December 7, launch it activities for 2012 International Year of Cooperatives, under the theme “Encouraging Entrepreneurship through Cooperatives”. President of the Dominica Cooperative Societies League Mr. Cletus Joseph says the organization is positioning itself to assist small cooperatives in their development thrust. The cooperative sector in Dominica has about 57,000 members in about 39 cooperatives and is estimated to account for over 1000 jobs around the island.

Guyana officially launched the International Year of Co-Operatives on Wednesday 25th January, at the Umana Yana, under the theme, “Co-operative enterprises build a better world.” Speaking on behalf of the president, Agriculture Minister Leslie Ramsammy said co-operatives remain an important part of the developmental trajectory of any country. In this regard, he said he supports the re-invigoration of co-operatives as he sees this as a means of maximizing the potential of the people.

On January 12, 2012 co-operators and co-op supporters from around Canada came together to celebrate the 2012 UN International Year of Co-operatives. Fourteen cities across the country hosted 14 simultaneous events to mark this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The celebration included a live webcast from Ottawa, Calgary and Lévis, QC. The webcast featured speeches from Steven Blaney, the federal Minister of Veterans Affairs, Kathy Bardswick, the president and CEO of The Co-operators, and Monique Leroux, the president and CEO of Desjardins. Samajam, a musical animation group from Montréal, premiered a co-operative musical work, created for the launch.

The launch was opened by Mr. David Bradbury, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer. It has been organised for the Australian International Year of Co-operatives Steering Committee by the IYC 2012 Secretariat.
